I can’t help but be humbled by the momentum and energy we have behind us. We didn`t just survive going independent, we proved small town Iowa hospitality can thrive without a corporate overlord. Two hotels brought back to life, an incredible team that serves our amazing guests, and fantastic feedback confirming we’re on the right track.

The amount of bills we pay every month are daunting. Variable costs like credit card fees and supplies are easy to manage. Because if we pay them it means we earned revenue. But the fixed costs like insurance are with us whether we are sold out or empty.

So how much do we charge per night? On average…around $102!

How do we keep our rates so low?

We don’t pay franchise fees, and because we aren’t held back by franchise agreements, we get to put our $ where it matters most…giving you the best quality experience, whilst keeping our rates competitive!

Alright we aren’t really trying to fire our awesome Front Desk team! But their role is certainly changing! Back in the day you HAD to check in at the desk to give payment, sign documents, get room keys, etc. Now all that can be done before you even enter the hotel.

So instead of our team doing admin paper work, they can focus on ensuring our guests have a wonderful stay! Of course, we can still do it the old school way. But even if only a few arrivals check-in online, it frees up our team’s time to deliver a better guest experience.

Took me longer than I care to admit realizing why our revenue looked awesome, but the balance in our bank barely moved!

Reality is hotels are huge cash cows, because they are also huge money pits! From the very start, we pay credit card fees on 12% hotel taxes we don’t even see. Then add in everything from bills to a 20+ member team that needs to be taken care of before the owners.

Not looking for sympathy, no doubt we’re in an extremely fortunate position. Thankfully after all the expenses we can still donate to our community and take care of our family. But it’s humbling reminder that top line revenue is the tip of the iceberg!

Safe to say my parents changed the trajectory of our family forever. For years they grinded at the hotel with a skeleton crew to make ends meet. Now we have a team of over 20 team members, with 401k benefits, two rebranded hotels, and they both get to retire!

When I told my Dad he could retire, he didn’t know what to do 😅

Now they are helping with the grandkids and catching up on vacations they should have taken years ago.

Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing that we’re able to give back to our communities, but being able to show my parents that their sacrifices weren’t for nothing means the world.

We think chains and big brands are slowly losing their credibility. They focus on growth at all cost, catering to the boardrooms instead of the guestrooms!

No joke I didn’t realize the winners were expected to give a speech. After a minute of freaking out, realized I just had to thank my team, my family, and all of you for your support!

IMHO not enough hotels having an American Flag…but I can understand why.

My parents had a flag pole at our Indianola hotel before we rebranded to Hotel Pommier, for them, it was just too much of a hassle and business expense to justify.

But when we renovated, we wanted to show our respect for our country, so a American flag was a priority, even if it can be a hassle!

Lots of you joined us during the renovation of our 2nd hotel, but we’ve been at this for a hot minute!

I began my first hotel renovation in October 2019. We kept the hotel open by sectioning off areas. This kept us afloat with revenue and kept our team employed. But when COVID hit in 2020, half the hotel was torn up and our revenue evaporated overnight.

With perseverance (and a ton of unexpected extra debt) somehow we survived. I don’t really use 2020 as a baseline for revenue since everything was so upside down. So percent changes are off 2019. Now we hit a new baseline, my goal is to maintain and grow where we can!

We’ll admit we’ve been pretty vocal about our experience on us leaving a corporate hotel chain, but we don’t want people to develop a negative opinion on the people running franchises!

The people who’re ruining the reputation and experience of these franchises are the corporate suits who often care more about lining their pockets than actually providing a quality guest experience.

The people on the ground work really hard to provide services, even if it’s not to a Hotel Pommier standard 😉
